Hull Highlights

The Woodland Blood Drive was held last Monday afternoon and evening. Thanks to the Woodland community the Indiana Blood Center collected 6 units of blood. This represents 18 lives that can be saved through your participation! Hopefully, next year the weather will be better and our number of donors can increase. We appreciate your continued support.

On Wednesday, February 28, Woodland Elementary School will observe Dr. Suess's birthday with a Family Reading Night and Science Fair display from grade 3. Students and their parents will be able to read books, take AR quizzes for some additional incentive points, answer some Dr. Suess trivia questions throughout the evening, enjoy birthday cake, and see examples of some wonderful student science experiments. We hope to have a big turnout for this event!

Each year, all Indiana third grade students take IREAD 3 in March. Woodland will administer this test beginning Tuesday, March 13. IREAD3 is a standardized test where students must demonstrate sufficient levels of proficiency in order to move on to fourth grade. Students who may not achieve at designated levels will receive additional instruction and be expected to attend summer school in June. They will have another opportunity to take the test and earn a passing score. Woodland students have worked hard all year and we are confident they will do well.

The Lifeskills for the next two weeks are resourcefulness and integrity.

Sweet's Stop

I ran across the below letter and it is a perfect reminder as we enter ISTEP testing this week:

Dearest Students,

This week you will take your ISTEP test for math and reading, and two weeks after that you (third grade)  will take your IREAD test. I know how hard you have worked, but there is something very important you must know.

The ISTEP and IREAD tests do not assess all of what makes you special and unique. The people who create these tests and score them do not know each of you like I do, and certainly not the way your families do.

They do not know that some of you speak two languages, or that you love to sing or draw. They have not seen your natural talent for dancing. They do not know that your friends count on you to be there for them, that you laughter can brighten the darkest day, or that your face turns red when you feel shy. They do not know that you participate in sports, wonder about the future, or sometimes you help with your little brother or little sister after school. They do not know that you are kind, trustworthy, and thoughtful… and every day you try your very best.

The scores you will get from these tests will tell you something, but they will not tell you everything. These tests do not define you. There are many ways of being smart. YOU are smart! You are enough! You are the light that brightens my day and the reason I am happy to come to work each day. So, in the midst of all of these tests, remember that there is no way to "test" all of the amazing and awesome things that make you, YOU.

All I ask is that you do your personal best and do not give up. You have been working for this since Kindergarten and are ready! I believe in you!

-Mary Ginley, a teacher at Buckton Vale Primary School

OTC MEDICATIONS

Our primary focus is on the health and well-being of your child. The goal for our staff is to provide our students with appropriate treatments to keep them at school and in class. The TSC physician provides standing orders for our health offices. These orders allow the use of first-aid medications including contact solution, eye drops, topical antiseptics, topical analgesics, throat lozenges/spray, antacids, oral glucose, and activated charcoal. Antihistamines (Benadryl and Pepcid) will be used as the first treatment of severe allergic reactions, and epinephrine is available if needed. It is the parent's/guardian's responsibility to notify the health office at their child's school if they prefer these items not be used when treating their child.

POWERSCHOOL

The health office has recently had a hard time reaching families during emergencies. Please update your contact information on PowerSchool. Help on how to edit this information on PowerSchool is shown below. In the case of an emergency we need to be able to reach a parent or guardian to be informed of incidents or to come pick their child up from school. If we cannot reach a parent during an emergency we are required to contact EMS and send the child on an ambulance to the emergency room. Thank you for your help in this. We try our best to call for head bumps, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and other emergency situations.

WINTER COATS

Please send your student's to school with a winter coat. Students go outside for recess if the wind chill is at or above 24 degrees.

DONATIONS

Thank you to those of you who graciously have donated to our school. We really appreciate all of your generosity!

IMMUNIZATIONS

If your child is needing immunizations, please have those taken care of. If you are unable or unwilling to obtain the needed immunizations you must provide one of the following documents:

  1. Written statement of medical contraindication due to allergy or medical condition signed by a physician.
  2. Written statement signed by the parent or guardian, telling us that you object to further immunization based on religious grounds.
  3. Written statement from your child's health care provider stating that they were unable to receive the immunization because of vaccine shortages.
  4. Laboratory evidence of immunity (cannot be used for tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis)

Religious exemption documents must be filed on a yearly basis.

EXCLUSIONS

Students with vomiting, diarrhea, undiagnosed eye infections, or fever over 100° should not attend school. Students exhibiting these symptoms at school will be sent home.

INCLUSIVE PRESCHOOL CLASSROOM

What is an inclusive classroom?

—  The GLASS Developmental Preschool programs serve children with disabilities between the ages of 3 and 5 years old.  A range of physical, mental and emotional disabilities may be represented in any one

classroom.  Typical peers attend in addition to the children with disabilities to serve as same age peer models for language, social, and academic development. The children have all of their daily activities together,

and the curriculum, as well as the classroom environment, is adapted to support the needs of all learners.  Children are seen as individuals, and it is recognized that all children are on a continuum of development.

Who works in an inclusive classroom?

The staff in the program consists of people from inside and outside the school who work together to support children with special needs:

—  Special education teachers instruct all students.

—  Classroom paraprofessionals work with the teachers to help children be as independent as possible in the classroom.

—  Related service providers may be speech therapists, occupational therapists, or physical therapists.  They help the classroom staff decide how to work with children who have special needs.  They also help children

develop skills and abilities needed to function well in the classroom.

—  Parents give the team important information about their children's progress and needs.  They also help with learning activities at home.

—  Administrative staff members help run the programs.  They also make sure that classroom staff members have the resources they need to work successfully with all children.

What are the benefits of an inclusive preschool program?

—  Increased knowledge and acceptance of human differences

—  Improved readiness skills

—  Increased opportunities for friendship

—  Increased  language, cognitive, and social skills

—  Improved self-esteem

What is peer model?

Peer models are an integral part of the inclusive preschool classroom.  They must have typically developing cognitive, language and social skills in order to provide good examples of these skills to peers experiencing developmental delays.

Who to contact for further information?

Please contact Tom Hermiz at thermiz@lsc.k12.in.us for further information.
