Some Battle Ground Elementary School students started their morning eating pancakes with firefighters at the Tippecanoe Township Volunteer Fire Department. Then, the students rode to school in the fire trucks with lights and sirens activated.
Fourth-grade student Porter Linvill says the ride was "bumpy, loud and fun." Classmate Lydia Ditto says it was a great experience. "We were going down the street with the lights and sirens going, and everyone was waving at us," says Lydia.
The theme for this year's Fire Prevention Week is "Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out." The National Fire Protection Association wants to reinforce that everyone needs to have an escape plan that includes two exits.
"They also told us to remember to practice your plan at home and at school," says Lydia. "Always check your smoke detectors and have a fire extinguisher."
Porter says the students were also reminded when to call 911 and when to stop, drop and roll.
