May 4, 2018 Volume 13 Number 13 NEWSLETTER
Message from the Principal Mike Pinto The picture above shows our fourth and fifth grade students after volunteering to Keep Stockwell Beautiful during "Cole Kids Clean Up Stockwell'. This picture serves as a good reminder to all of us not to take for granted some of the experiences provided to our children by staff and community members. As we look at the last month of the year, there are many events like Mother's Day Tea, Wax Museum, Pond Day, Kindergarten Celebration, Camp Tecumseh, Fifth Grade Celebration, Talent Show, and Field Day to name a few. We call these events 'Traditions' because we want to build an experience at Cole where each year students know that, "This day we get to do...." and it's unique, fun, and different. These require funding from parents, of which we are grateful. These traditions require funding and support often from the Cole PTO. They are always wonderful. They also require lots of time and energy both during the school hours and outside the school hours by our staff members. As we go through the last month of this school year with every day holding a new excitement, please look upon these moments with gratitude. Because they are wonderful and memory-builidng. When you participate in these events, the words "Thank You" go so very far. It's been a wonderful school year and the ending of it looks to be filled with many smiles. Thank you for doing your part to lend support and gratitude for all that comes your child's way and help me in never taking these offerings for granted.
Bring Back Those Library Books It's that time of year when library book checkout comes to an end and we begin the search for all books that may be tucked away in toy boxes or hidden among those in the family library. The last day for library books to be checked out at Cole is Friday, May 11. We are asking that all library books be returned to Cole by Thursday, May 24. We will be contacting parents for reimbursement for lost books after that time. Your assistance continuing to encourage your child to read at home is appreciated. Please also assist us in making sure all books are returned to the Kelley Library for use by students next year and into the future.
Summer Meal Program
Dear Parent/Guardian,
This summer we will be offering a special, free meal delivery program with kid-friendly food in Lafayette.
Many families rely on school breakfast and lunch to help ease tight budgets. However, when summer arrives, and school meals are no longer an option, it becomes harder to make ends meet. This summer pilot program helps families stretch their resources and ensures that children receive nutritious meals throughout the summer and return each school year ready to learn. By serving meals in your home to your children and other children in the community, you can ensure that all children have the food they need this summer.
Families accepted to the program will receive healthy, kid-friendly lunches and snacks delivered directly to their door each week. To be accepted, families must agree to serve meals to children from outside their home, attend a program training and complete basic paperwork. We are excited for the opportunity to support our community through this program, and encourage you to apply if this program is right for your family.
An enrollment form is attached for your convenience. If you are interested in participating in the program, please fill out the attached form and return it to Courtney Sloan at Food Finders by June 1st. You can also apply online at Here Accepted families will be notified of their acceptance by our team.
Thank you for your interest! If you have questions or need more information, call Courtney Sloan at 765.471.0062 or email at csloan@food-finders.org.
Sincerely,
Program Coordinator
Cole 500 Canned Food Drive The Denise McIntyre Cole 500 Canned Food Drive will be held May 7-11 at Cole. This food drive benefits Food Finders Food Bank. Mrs. McIntyre, the retired Cole Cafeteria Manager, comes back each year to run the Cole 500 Food Drive. Competition is held between classrooms with each classroom progress measured in 'laps' around the track on the wall in the Cole Cafe. Please plan to send your non-perishable food items during the week of May 7-11. The winning classroom receives a big drink of milk like the race car drivers and a chance to ride in the Indy 500 Pace Car!
911 Call - Have You Practiced? One of the components of the fourth grade RAD Kids program is a simulation where students run around a course in the gym then have to pick up the phone to dial 911 and state the emergency. You can help at home by having the conversation with your child about when it is appropriate to call 911 and what you should say if you have to call. Knowing basics like your address and their parents' names are important. Please consider having this conversation at home with your child for something you hope they never have to use, but are equipped to if called upon.
Are You Moving? It is that time of year when we begin to turn our sights toward next year. To that end, we are asking that parents who know you will be moving out of the Cole district next year to please contact Mrs. Kesterson. This helps us to create class lists and also prepare records at the end of the year to forward to your child's new school. We hate to see you go, but want to make your move as easy as possible so your child has a smooth transition.
Here are some simple gratitude tips that you can try starting right now:
Class Lists Each year teachers work to create class lists by academic and social needs as well as finding a best fit. Because of our small size, we cannot honor teacher requests, but if there are circumstances that need to be considered when these lists are developed, please make sure that you have reached out to Mr. Pinto prior to May 1. This information may be useful in placing your child in the classroom with peers that is the best fit for him/her. The challenge comes when this information is brought to light after lists have been finalized and changes can throw off the delicate balance created when the lists were formed. Thank you for any input that may assist our instructional mission.
Bulky Trash Clarks Hill Town Pride has scheduled Bulky Trash for Saturday and Sunday, May 19 and 20 at the Fire station. Keep Stockwell Beautiful has been scheduled for Saturday, June 23 from 8-6 Sunday, June 24 from 8-6 It will be held at Wainwright Middle School this year because of a large Summer Rec tournament held at Cole. E-Waste will Not be rescheduled at this time. Tractor tires are $10 Collecting non-perishable food items for the Clarks Hill Food Pantry. Items accepted are non-freon, non-hazardous household items.
How fortunate are we that directly outside our school doors we have a beautiful Outdoor Education Center including a wetland, pond, shelter, and classroom area! These two pictures are from the Grade 4 and 5 Pond Day held May 1. Students had a chance to learn about many of the species in the Outdoor Education Center as well as a chance to interact with macro-invertebrates in the wetlands and even to fish in the pond! Amazing learning experiences for our students. Thank you to Keep Stockwell Beautiful for partnering with the school to offer support of this amazing educational space!
Computer Mouse for Next Year Next year on the school supply list, there will be an option for students in grades 3-5 to bring with them to school a wireless mouse. This is an option, but one many students may want to take advantage of as we become more skilled with our Chromebooks. If you have a child who will be a student in grades 3-5 next year, you might consider picking a wireless mouse up over the summer in preparation for next year.
Setting an Example From Stands It's that time of year again when baseball, and softball practices and games will be played on the school grounds. Everyone's help is needed to make these events positive for our children. Keeping our school grounds clean and attractive takes a community effort. Please encourage your child to help pick up trash after ball games. Sportsmanship is also needed for a positive experience for our children. The Lauramie Summer Rec expects coaches, team members, and parents to conduct themselves at all time with civility. The use of profanity, alcohol, or tobacco at the game site or in the presence of children is unacceptable. Our efforts to keep our school grounds beautiful and to act appropriately around our children send a strong signal to them. Parking is permitted on black top surfaced areas only and not permitted on the grass. Help our custodians who are in and out of both garage door areas by not parking in these locations. Also, please use the driveway to enter and exit the school grounds. Do not travel down the grassy path cut between the fields under which the sewer line runs to enter and exit. Our actions show visitors to our school the high expectations we have for our children's behavior and the pride we hold as a school community. While spring sporting events hold a special importance for our students, their homework and a good night's sleep are more important. Please help us keep a balance this spring and keep school as the first priority.
Summer Reading Program The Tippecanoe County Public Library will once again be hosting a Summer Reading Program. Information is presented in the form of a video linked on the blue button to the left.
Emergency Munchie Truck (EMT Food Truck) Coming The Emergency Munchie Truck (EMT Food Truck) is coming to Cole on May 17 from 11-1. Cole Professionals Graduate In its inaugural year, 43 fifth graders met all of the requirements to be named "Cole Professionals". These individuals earned the badges necessary to complete the Cole Professional Academy experience and were honored at a ceremony at Duncan Hall in April. Each Cole Professional received a padfolio along with their certificate of completion and were acknowledged for their actions through the motivational words of Jeff Rosebraugh from Caterpillar and Dr. Maryann Santos from Purdue University School of Education. Congratulations to all Cole Professionals!

Our fifth graders run the recycling program. They do this of their free will and go from classroom to classroom gathering recycling bins and putting them into the larger bins which are then picked up with other cardboard recycling. The Recycling Program is part of "Greening TSC" an initiative geared toward saving energy and also promoting environmental stewardship through initiatives like recycling. We appreciate the fifth grade for their help with recycling. Know that there is a recycling bin located in Stockwell that is regularly emptied for all of your recycling needs. We are working hard to grow kind citizens at Cole Elementary School. Part of being a citizen is practicing good habits like recycling that helps the planet in many ways.
