As the weather changes, so will our student attire. Please remember that students should wear clothing that appropriately covers the body. Shorts and skirts must be of moderate length. Shoulders should be covered: no spaghetti straps, sundresses, tank tops or basketball jerseys without t-shirts under them. Please note that we appreciate the latest fashions, but shoulders must be covered. Field Trip

On May 14th, the second graders visited the Columbian Park Zoo to learn more about Growing Up in the Wild. While there they learned how we can help the rainforest by shopping smarter and looking at the labels. Students also learned the importance of protecting the animals habitat. We were able to pet and learned facts about a blind possum, a tree frog, and a bearded dragon Students were able to explore the zoo with their small group to see wallabies, eagles, otters, and many more animals!

During the second part of the field trip, we visited with a naturalist, Mrs. Cutler at the Tippecanoe Battlefield Park. Mrs. Cutler taught us about the life cycle of a tree and the parts and functions of a tree. Then we took a walking tour to see the different trees in the park to see each stage of growth. Finally we were able to explore the  park and see the different things nature has to offer! Feel free to visit both parks over the summer. Both are a hidden treasure in our community and are FREE. Thanks to PTO for funding this learning trip!

Go West Young Man!

The second grade classes were visited by Mr. and Mrs. Swink on Friday, May 18th. They shared with us their replica of a pioneer wagon to complete our study of pioneer life.  Mrs. Swink discussed the decision making process of what to take on the long journey, how to pack the wagon, and why the
family was traveling west. Mr. Swink helped us explore the inside of the wagon and discussed the different tools that pioneers would take along with them. The second graders loved learning about life a pioneer. Thanks to the Swink family for their time
and expertise.

Summer Activities

Summer break is fast approaching!
Here are some ideas on how to avoid the 'summer slide' and keep the 'I'm bored' from the children's vocabulary.  You can find so many great ideas on Pinterest, or just by searching Google. Some key phrases/words to search: Summer Slide, Summer School Tips, Summer School Activities, Summer STEM Activities and Summer boredom are just a few you can use to start your searches.
Here are few suggestions:

● READ! READ! READ! Research shows that reading just six books during the summer may keep a struggling reader
from regressing. Take advantage of your local library. Libraries often have summer reading programs. Read something
everyday! For an independent reader, 20 minutes is usually a good amount of time to read.
● Read out loud. Reading out loud benefits all children and teens.
● Cook with your children. This is one of the best ways to integrate math, reading and following directions.
● Plant a garden. Children gain responsibility and pride as they watch their plants grow.
● Take pictures and make a summer scrapbook. Encourage your child to write narratives to accompany the pictures.
● Take a field trip. Visit a museum, zoo or local park. Go hiking or walking on a trail. Keep a journal about the travels.
● Learn a new word each week. Post a word on the fridge and see who can use it the most during the week.
● Listen to audio books.
● Play quick games with flashcards, like Math War or Concentration to keep math skills sharp.
● Enroll in a quality summer program.
● Make time to read! If nothing else, make sure your child is reading!!

For our Lifelines for May, we will be talking about Responsibility!

Responsibility is being accountable for your actions, choices, and belongings. It is doing what you'll say you do.  Responsibility is something that is regularly spoken about at school. It's something that we strive each student to demonstrate but many times is something students don't completely understand. An engaging activity to try to drive home what responsibility is is "What's At Stake?" Give your students a simple scenario and ask them to stand after they think of someone who might be a stakeholder in the decision. For example: Who are the stakeholders if you show up late to pitch a baseball game? Expect students' answers to include the catcher, backup pitcher, teammates, umpire, coaches, parents, fans, other team, concession manager, and so forth. Once students see this visual representation of how many people have a stake in their decisions, they start to understand the importance of thinking things through and not making decisions haphazardly.

To help our students make informed and responsible choices, we use a four-step decision-making model: Stop to give yourself time to think.

Look at all your options.

Think about the consequences of each option.

Decide what's best for the most people involved.

Responsibility is also a skill learn important for life outside the classroom as well. Chores are also an important part of being responsible. The best way for children to get better at taking responsibility for their actions is by giving them responsibilities and then getting out of their way. At home, chores are daily tasks that need to be done like folding laundry, setting the table, or making a bed. At school, chores can be helping with classroom management or simply completing homework and projects. The ultimate goal of the virtue of responsibility is to raise young people who show self-control, self-discipline, self-management, and self-regulation.
