Wea Ridge

September 2018

Message from the Principal

Fred Roop

As this newsletter reaches your home, we are well into the start of a great year at Wea Ridge Middle School.  This has been a smooth start to the school year thanks to the dedication of our teachers and staff, the hard work of our students, and the support of our parents.

Throughout this school year we will use a variety of ways to communicate with our parents.  I encourage you to monitor the progress of your student in the classroom throughout the school year by utilizing the Parent Portal.  The Parent Portal can be accessed on our school website, under the Quicklinks tab.  This will allow you to track grades and attendance to support your child's success at home.  If your student is struggling, please contact the classroom teacher or Mrs. Gilbert, our counselor.

Our upcoming Parent/Teacher conferences will be another opportunity for you to meet with teachers to discuss the progress of your child at Wea Ridge Middle School.  These conferences will be held on September 11 from 5-7:30 pm and September 17 from 3-5:00 pm. Our conferences at Wea Ridge Middle are an open style, where all teachers are available in the gym.  There are no appointments, and you can come at your convenience during our conference times to speak with our teachers.

In addition to periodic email updates, one final opportunity for parents to stay in touch with Wea Ridge classrooms is through Canvas Parent Access.  This is available on your computer or through the Canvas Mobile App.

I appreciate all of the time and energy our parents provide to send our students to school ready to learn.  It is critical that students are present every day and that we make the most of the 45 minutes we have in each class period.   As a school we will engage students in meaningful activities for the entire class period . We will rely on our parents to help us achieve  this goal by limiting student absences and time out of class for appointments. Thank you for your support of Wea Ridge Middle School.

Papa John's

Positive Referrals

Wea Ridge Middle is continuing our Gotcha Program which supports positive behaviors by students.  Students receive a Gotcha when they are caught following our school motto "Treat People Right, Do the Right Thing".  Students put their Gotchas in a weekly drawing at lunch for prizes. At the end of each semester all Gotchas go in a drawing for a grand prize.

We are excited to announce that we have expanded our positive behavior program to include Positive Referrals.  Students who get "written up" for a positive action or behavior will have an opportunity to be recognized with a Positive Referral.  Each month we will randomly select students who received positive referrals to participate in Pizza with the Principals. These students will have pizza for lunch provided by Papa Johns.  We would like to thank Papa Johns for their generous donation to help support our Pizza with the Principal program. Thank you Papa Johns!

Text Alerts

TSC and WRM Text Alerts

We still have a few months before our winter weather creates problems with arrival to school.  It is important to make sure you are signed up for TSC's emergency notification system. If you haven't done so in the past or need to add WRM alerts, please go to the TSC Alerts and Notifications section of the TSC Webpage. In order to sign-up you use your same username and password for the Parent Portal. Please let us know if you have any questions or need assistance. Once you have signed up for the notification system, you will receive the TSC's alert information, such as weather delays and cancellations of school.

Damged Chromebook

Chromebook Insurance

Regardless of how hard we try, accidents happen. The staff at WRM has spoken with students about the responsibility and care associated with having a Chromebook. It is important for all parents to consider purchasing insurance for their student's Chromebook. TSC has partnered with a third party vendor to offer a reasonably priced, no-deductible insurance plan. For more information or to enroll, go to the TSC Technology Department webpage under General Information.

Counselor Corner

Counselor Connection

Hello! My name is Ebony Gilbert and I am excited to be starting my 2nd year here at Wea Ridge. My objective is to try to reach all of the students in our building by providing large and small group guidance curriculum about personal, academic, and career-related topics. I also look for opportunities to provide service and resources to parents through the Coffee with the Counselor Program or during parent/teacher conferences.

There will be a number of upcoming events and dates for you to be aware of and that will be shared via the school website.  I will also share updated information about when I am visiting certain classrooms as well as helpful resources for the parents over the course of the year, so feel free to check that for student services-related information.

Here is a quick look at what is to come in the month of September:

  • 6th Grade Classroom presentation (student services and coping skills) - Sept 1 in Health
  • 8th Grade Classroom presentation (college and career preparation) - Sept 14 in English classes
  • College GO Week September 25-29. Various activities throughout the week to promote thinking of colleges.

I am able to be reached during the school via phone or email. If you would like to make a request for me to talk to your students, you may use the Counselor Referral Form.

Parent Volunteers

Volunteer Information

Volunteer Procedures Changing - Effective September 30, 2018 -- Don't wait!

It is a priority of the Tippecanoe School Corporation to provide a safe learning environment for all of our students and employees. In an effort to continue our due diligence, we now require all volunteers having ongoing contact with children and/or supervising students (field trips, etc.) to have cleared an expanded criminal background check. These background checks are conducted through Background Investigation Bureau (BIB).

The criminal background check will search national sex offender databases, court records, and other sources. The cost of the criminal history check is $17.95 (base cost) and is paid for by the volunteer through a link on our website.

Once approved, the volunteer will receive a TSC Volunteer identification card that will be valid for a period of three (3) years. If you volunteer in multiple buildings, you will only need to complete one background check.

Volunteer background checks may take several business days to process, so it is important to plan ahead.

We appreciate your understanding of this important safety guideline.  The volunteer form can be completed on the TSC website.

Tech fit

Interested in learning some basic computer game programing?  Like being active and playing games?  TechFit might be the club for your student!

Homework Help

Husky Homework Help

Husky Homework Help is every day after school. Students are expected to collect their belongings and come straight to room 209. If you don't have homework, you are asked to go home. This eliminates distractions for students working. We study from 2:30-3:15. Parents need to make sure there is a ride at school by 3:15. While here, students are expected to work quietly.  Mrs. Kellogg will be available for help with assignments.

Intramural Sports

Intramural Sports are available for all students grades 6-8.  We offer a wide variety of activities.  Students are welcome to participate as their schedule allows.  To participate, please complete the permission form.  For questions contact Mrs. Sanson or Mrs. Raeke.

Box Tops

Husky Parent Association News

The Husky Parent Association (HPA) will be sponsoring a Box Tops for Education collection at school this fall.  Start saving box tops now.  Students will bring their box tops into homeroom during October for a contest.  The homeroom with the most BoxTops for Education will receive a prize.

TSC E-Flyers

TSC supports 'green' efforts and as such to help ensure students receive information about community services or events, flyers from non-profit outside organizations are posted online in a section called E-Flyers. All E-Flyers can be accessed from any TSC School Website: by clicking the 'students' or 'parents' link in the upper right hand corner of the webpage. E-Flyers will be posted on the 15th and 30th of the month so be sure to check regularly for newly posted information.
