From the Office

Mrs. Garza and Mrs. Blann welcome you to Wea Ridge Elementary and to another great year!  We look forward to meeting and seeing parents/guardians.  Just a few reminders to help make things run smoothly:

  • Our phone number is 765-471-9321 to report absences or tardies.  If we cannot answer the call, please leave a message.  You may also email us at adblann@tsc.k12.in.us AND bgarza@tsc.k12.in.us  If we do not hear from you about an absence, we will be contacting you.
  • You are welcome to inform your teacher of an absence, tardy or dismissal change per the teacher's communication policy.  However, you MUST also inform the office as indicated above.
  • Any dismissal changed should be communicated as soon as possible via written note, email (remember to email both secretaries) or phone call, again making sure the office has this information.   Please note that after 3pm we will not interrupt your child's class.  Therefore, we cannot accept end of day changes after 3pm.
  • If your child is riding home with another student, we must receive written notes from BOTH sets of parents/guardians, or the end of day change will not take place.  We cannot make calls to verify the change.

Volunteer Procedures Have Changed

It is a priority of the Tippecanoe School Corporation to provide a safe learning environment for all of our students and employees. In an effort to continue our due diligence, we now require all volunteers having ongoing contact with children and/or supervising students (field trips, etc.) to have cleared an expanded criminal background check. These background checks are conducted through Background Investigation Bureau (BIB).

The criminal background check will search national sex offender databases, court records, and other sources. The cost of the criminal history check is $17.95 (base cost) and is paid for by the volunteer through a link on our website.

Once approved, the volunteer will receive a TSC Volunteer identification card that will be valid for a period of three (3) years. If you volunteer in multiple buildings, you will only need to complete one background check.

Volunteer background checks may take several business days to process so it is important to plan ahead.

We appreciate your understanding of this important safety guideline.

Tips for Parents: Your Role in School Success

A Teacher's Expectation of Parents
Students, teachers, and parents all share responsibility in the education of a child. As a parent, here's a minimum level of involvement most teachers expect:

Help your student by developing a routine or specific time for homework where you are available to help or listen if needed. You are vital to their success.
Ensure your child is at school, on time, every day possible. Arrange for vacations, trips, etc. during days off school.
Make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast each morning so they can function in class.
Make sure your student is getting adequate sleep at night to support their growing body and mind.
Be a positive role model in your child's eyes who shows interest in reading and learning new things.
Notify the teacher of any concerns or questions you have regarding their learning or treatment in school.

Nurse Notes

A few quick Health Office Reminders: Please remind your children to wash their hands with soap and water or at the least use the hand sanitizer in their classrooms to help prevent the spread of germs. This will help reduce absences.

Talk to your children about NOT sharing hair ties, headbands, hats, sweatshirts, headphones etc.  This will help eliminate the possibility of lice.  Known fact, lice can NOT jump.  It is transmitted only by direct contact, head to head; yes this means hugging friends.

Remember, that ALL controlled medication must be brought into the Health Office by a parent in the original bottle and we must have a current order on file prior to administering the medication.

Students are not allowed to keep cough drops on them as this is considered a medication.  If your student uses cough drops, send them into the Health Office labeled with their name.  We also keep cough drops in the Health Office provided by TSC.  Lastly, keep all PowerSchool contact information current in case there is ever a need for the school to contact you due to an injury or an illness.

Wea Ridge Run Club

Objectives:

1)     Our main objective is to improve the overall fitness of the students and staff of Wea Ridge Elementary through regular group running/walking.  We do continue running throughout the winter, weather permitting.

2)     Another objective of the Wea Ridge Run Club is to introduce cross country running for possible future runners in the Wea Ridge Middle School and later into the McCutcheon's boys and girls cross country and track programs.  We hope to again have our WRRC cross country race in the fall (run by the McCutcheon cross country team).

Background:

The Wea Ridge Run Club was founded in November of 2008 and continued through the 2012 school year.  Over the five years from 2008-2012, the WRRC ran over 10,000 miles total and had as many as 150 runners.  The WRRC was dropped because of insurance constraints which have now been resolved.

Details:

The WRRC will be directed by myself, Mrs. Wright, and Mrs. Danielle Shively.  I have been a teacher at Wea Ridge since its inception in 1999 and initiated and directed the WRRC from 2008-2012.  This is my 22nd year in elementary education.  I also have coached many years.

Mrs. Wright is a long-time fifth grade teacher here at WRE.  She directed the Girls on the Run program last year. This is her 16th year in elementary education.

Mrs. Shively is a former parent of WRE students Austin and Taylor Shively.  She is a long time runner and a current Indianapolis Mini Marathon Ambassador.

Who:                  Currently, 4th & 5th grade WRE girls and boys

Where:               Wea Ridge Elementary School & the Wea Ridge Middle School campuses.

When:                Every Tuesday & Thursday, 3:30-4:30.  Some off-site 5k races & outings.  September 11

until the end of March (spring break)

What to bring:     Running shoes, appropriate clothing, filled water bottle with name on all.

Cost:                   Free other than WRRC shirt & race fees if your child is interested.

This year, the WRRC meetings will take place indoors if weather does not permit outside running.  Run Club may sometimes still have to be cancelled because of last second issues, after school events, parent meetings, absences, etc.  The WRRC will also be closed on parent/teacher conference week plus some other times as well. Therefore, please do not use the WRRC as a replacement for your normal after school daycare.  We do not want any loss of learning time or inconvenience to teachers. Kids are NOT to call home during the school day because of WRRC. Please check your weekly schedule in advance.  If your child is in doubt or does not have proper clothing or shoes, they will just be sent home that day.  WRRC clothing should be worn to school. Kids are NOT to ask to change before school is out. Fifty students in two bathrooms at the end of the day is a bad thing.  Inappropriate or unsafe behavior may lead to a "vacation" from the WRRC. Do the Right Thing, Treat People Right, and accomplishing their job as a student are required to remain in the WRRC.  All runners must run with at least one other runner. Adults will also be running on the course. Your child will have to sign in and sign out with Mrs. Wright or another adult of the WRRC. I encourage safety (stretching, proper clothing, stopping in cases of pain, miles limits, staying with another, and running safely), but we do run in an area that has some traffic and in a wooded area with some difficult terrain.  Our normal mile path takes us around both the elementary and the middle school and around the football parking lot. We have never had an accident other than a slip on the ice. In any case, your child is invited to join us but there is always a chance for injury. Your child will meet at my room (25) after school, but they will not be allowed anywhere else in the building without my permission and/or supervision. We will also need for your child to be picked up by 4:30.  Pick up is at the gym doors (door #17) of Wea Ridge Elementary. You may pick up your child at any time before 4:30 (MUST SIGN OUT), and your child may run any days that you and he/she chooses. Students may also join the WRRC at any time during the school year (WRRC season-Sept-March). Your child will have access to a phone after school while I am here. Please try to be on time to pick up your child. A signed permission slip is required to run. I hope your Timberwolf will come join us to reform the WRRC Wolf Pack.  "Together" (WRRC motto), we can achieve great things!

Mr. Webber (765-413-5427, rwebber@tsc.k12.in.us )  Please leave a voicemail if I don't answer.

Wea Ridge Run Club Permission Slip

I give my permission for my child ___________________ who is in the _____ grade in _______________________class to stay after school to run with the WRRC, Mr. Webber and/or other Wea Ridge staff members, and WRRC volunteers.  I understand that:

-there is traffic in the parking lot areas where they run.  Stretching will take place on all running days, and safety will be stressed.  In the case of all athletic activities, accidents may happen and Mr. Webber and/or other staff members, volunteers, Wea Ridge Elementary/Middle School, or Tippecanoe School Corporation will not be held liable.

-I must pick up my child by 4:30.  If I am late in picking up my child regularly, they may be dropped from the WRRC.  Members will be instructed to wait outside at the Wea Ridge Elementary door 17 or inside near the door during bad weather.  The WRRC may be cancelled at any time and without notice. Your child will go home by your normal transportation instructions that have been turned into the office.

-there will be adult supervision, but because of the nature of the activity, my child will not be watched at all times.  My child must stay in the upper grades foyer if in the building at the conclusion of WRRC.
