FROM MRS. FIELDS

Parent Teacher Conferences will take place the week of October 15-19.  Teachers will send home an appointment time with students on Monday.  Please return your reply promptly.

We pride ourselves on the 99% turnout we have each time we hold conferences.  We value these times to meet with parents/guardians.

PICTURE RETAKES AND MAKEUPS

Monday, October 22

Every student present on September 14 had their picture taken.  Orders will arrive soon.

If you are not happy with your child's picture you can request retakes by returning the complete package to the Hershey office with a note indicating the reason for your request.

If your child was not present on picture day we will take his/her picture when the photographer returns.  You will receive an order form sent home with your child if you wish to place an order.

INFORMATION FROM MISS RIORDAN

I am sure that many reading this can relate, but I can't believe how quickly the time is going and we are almost into October!

As mentioned in the previous newsletter, I have been spending time in each classroom talking with the students about safety--specifically personal safety and bully prevention. I reinforce that the students are the most important people in the school and if they don't feel safe, it is going to be very hard for them to learn! While reading a short story, we talk about the multiple choices they have in each situation to keep themselves safe. Some examples include: telling an adult (teachers, principal, counselor, recess and cafeteria staff, bus drivers, etc); using their words, such as "I need you to stop _____", "please stop"; walk away; and using their friends/other peers to help, as we know the validity of strength in numbers. I have also had some parents share books and content they use at home which has been helpful because it is hard to keep up with all the different materials out there! Feel free to contact me at mmriordan@tsc.k12.in.us or (765) 269-8282 if you have any additional questions, comments or concerns about the material.

We had our first Leadership Club meeting where the leaders helped with creating signs for each classroom and exterior doors. This helps with safety in the school because now we have numbered signs outside and inside each door. In the event we have a safety drill and we communicate through the radio a room number, students and teachers inside and outside that room are aware of where they are and where to go! We have 41 leaders this year and I am excited to work with them on developing leadership skills as well as working with different community members and organizations throughout the school year.

We've had two, After Hour Brain Power groups and we have hit the ground running learning about the brain!  We've broken into small groups and students created creative ways to remember the different lobes of their brains and the functions of them. Then, the small groups taught the large group about it. We also did an escape room where students had to crack codes about executive functioning in order to move on to another code! Executive functioning skills are skills such as planning, organization, time management and task initiation. We know as adults, these skills are critical to have! If you would like more information on executive functioning and/or ways to intentionally grow these skills at home, contact me at mmriordan@tsc.k12.in.us or (765) 269-8282.
