Sweet and Hull's  Highlights

Thanks to everyone who participated in Parent/Teacher conferences this past week. We do enjoy sharing information about your child's growth and success and appreciate you making it a priority to attend your scheduled time. If you were unable to meet with the teacher this week, please email or call to reschedule or speak with them. We will utilize a similar schedule again in February 2018 and will notify you with a time on a corresponding date when it is scheduled. Changes can always be made if conflicts arise closer to the conference dates.

Fall classroom parties will be next week on Thursday, October 25th. Parties are to be about 30 minutes in length and should be completed no later than 3:00 with all cars removed from the bus parking area. We look forward to seeing many of our room parents and guests on that day!

Through the High Five behavior system at Woodland, we are able to highlight students who exhibit the life skills of  respect, integrity, cooperation, responsibility, and perseverance. Staff members who see students meeting these expectations throughout the school award those students Owl Honors. The students are able to put those Owl Honors in a drawing to earn prizes. We began awarding students with books, extra recess and lunch with the principal this week.  We will continue honoring students who model proper academic and social skills throughout the school day! Great job Woodland Owls!

School Closings and Delays:

For information on school closings and delays, please tune to WLFI TV 18, WASK 98.7 (radio), WAZY 96.5 or TSC Website, Sign up to receive notices via email or text at www.tsc.k12.in.us

Reminders:

The tardy bell rings at 9:00 a.m. If a student arrives at school after the tardy bell rings we require a parent to walk the student into the building and sign the student in at the office. A hallway pass will be given to the student and they may proceed to class.

Woodland is looking for people who are interested in substituting as an instructional assistant when a member of the Woodland Staff would be absent. People are needed to help with supervision of students at recess and in the cafeteria. Woodland also needs individuals who are willing to work with individual or small groups through the resource room. If you are interested and able to help out with these paid substitute opportunities, please contact Ms. Nulty at Woodland.

Tippecanoe School Corporation and Woodland Elementary Website!!

TSC's website underwent a complete overhaul last summer. It has essentially become a one stop shop for all news, events, and reminders. Please take some time to explore the site and the "Parents" tab. Under this tab you will find how to access the ParentPortal and most importantly—how to sign up for alerts.  Please click the link "TSC Alerts & Notifications".  This link will take you to a document that will guide you in signing up for alerts via text or email. This is  very important because of late buses. Or weather delays/cancellations. It is also a great way to get reminders for events that we place on our school calendar. If you have questions, please call the Woodland office.

PLEASE be sure to keep your EMAIL ADDRESS  up to date on your ParentPortal for important communication from the school office!!

DROP OFF AND PICK UP PROCEDURES

All students who are picked up and /or dropped off by cars are to utilize the back parking lot. Students should enter doors #16 and #17. Students may not be dropped off before 8:50. Please do not let your student out of the vehicle before you see an adult.

The front parking area is for unloading and loading buses only. Please DO NOT drop off any students in the front of the building.

All doors will be locked at 9:00. If your child arrives after 9:00 please enter through the front doors and you must sign them in at the office.

Personal Body Safety

During November, our counselor will be meeting with each classroom to present a TSC-required sexual abuse prevention lesson. The Indiana Department of Education requires that these lessons be completed by December 15, 2018. Each lesson consists of either a book-based or DVD-based discussion to help students develop an important personal safety plan. If you have any questions or would like to preview the material for your child's grade level, please call our counselor, Mr. Mugford, at 269-8220.

Nurse News

 Dear Woodland Owl Family,

We are entering a time of increased viral illness. This is largely due to a greater amount of person to person contact from more time spent indoors and an increase in social gatherings for the season. Please consider being vaccinated for the flu and remember that hand washing is your greatest weapon in preventing the spread of infection and illness. For your information, please review the TSC school exclusion criteria:

"Students with vomiting, diarrhea, undiagnosed skin rashes, eye infections, or fever over 100° should not attend school. Students exhibiting these symptoms at school will be sent home. With vomiting and diarrhea, the school nurse will evaluate any associated circumstances and other symptoms before making an exclusion decision. Children vomit for reasons other than illness, including coughing, stress, exertion, reflux and food intolerance. Students with vomiting, diarrhea, or fever over 100º should not return to school until the symptoms have resolved without medication for 24 hours. Students with pink eye may return to school with a doctor's note when the symptoms subside or when a student shows treatment has begun with appropriate eye drops. Contagious skin rashes should be reported to your school nurse and a note will be required by your child's physician to return to school. Please remember with all of these exclusion criteria that our job is to facilitate students remaining in school. Our goal is to have the child miss as little class time as possible." © 2017 Tippecanoe School Corporation

Volunteer Procedures Changing - Effective September 30, 2018

It is a priority of the Tippecanoe School Corporation to provide a safe learning environment for all of our students and employees. In an effort to continue our due diligence, we now require all volunteers having ongoing contact with children and/or supervising students (field trips, etc.) to have cleared an expanded criminal background check. These background checks are conducted through Background Investigation Bureau (BIB).

The criminal background check will search national sex offender databases, court records, and other sources. The cost of the criminal history check is $17.95 (base cost) and is paid for by the volunteer through a link on our website. SECUREVOLUNTEER

Once approved, the volunteer will receive a TSC Volunteer identification card that will be valid for a period of three (3) years. If you volunteer in multiple buildings, you will only need to complete one background check.

Volunteer background checks may take several business days to process so it is important to plan ahead.

We appreciate your understanding of this important safety guideline.
