November 2018

NEWSLETTER

Message from the Principal

Fred Roop

November is a month that is most often associated with giving thanks. It is a time to celebrate and give thanks for the special friends and family that are a part of our lives. On November 12th, we will be remembering and thanking the men and women of the armed forces who have served our country. Wea Ridge Middle School will be honoring these selfless men and women on Veterans Day, with a school-wide program at 9:30am. We invite you to join us as we honor the sacrifices of the family members of our students and staff at our program.

I am thankful for the wonderful work of our students and staff during the first quarter of the school year.  In the newsletter you will see students who have earned recognition on our honor roll and those that have had perfect attendance through the first nine weeks of the school year.  Our athletic teams were very successful this fall.  All four volleyball squads advanced to the championship game of the TSC tournament, with both 7th and 8th grade A teams capturing both the TSC championship and the WCJC conference title.  Many of our clubs and activities have been active this school year.  The speech team has earned many awards through the first part of their competion season.  Students In Action, Robotics, Tech Fit, the Wea Ridge Junior Honor Society and Student Council have been busy with many activities and programs.

Finally, I would like to thank our parents for their support.  The Husky Parent Association has been active creating opportunities for our students and supporting our staff.  I would encourage you to support the HPA in their upcoming restaurant night at Arni's on November 5th.   All of our parents make a difference in our building as we work together to develop our students' young minds and create thoughtful and engaged citizens in the future.

Parent Teacher Conferences
Husky Parent AssociationThe Husky Parent Association will be sponsoring a restaurant night on November 5th from 5-9pm at Arni's on Veteran's Memorial Parkway.  The HPA will receive a portion of all sales from dine-in or carry-out orders.  You must present this flyer at the time of the visit.  Consider supporting our parent association with some delicious pizza for your family on Nov. 5th.

Students In Action Movie Night

Our Wea Ridge Middle SIA group will be hosting a movie night for students on Friday, November 16 starting at 6:30  to benefit students in Pamlico County, NC who were impacted by Hurricane Florence. The middle school in that district flooded and students have been displaced. We are partnering with them in order to help raise money for supplies, books, materials and to spread some positive school spirit for that school community. Students will be able to purchase tickets for the Movie Night starting on Nov. 5 during lunch periods for $5 which will include popcorn. Additional concession sales will be available at the event as well as raffle ticket sales for prizes. Please show your support and join us for this fun night. We plan to show two movies in the gyms (Wonder and Incredibles 2). This event is open to Wea Ridge Middle School Students Only!

2018 Riley Walk-A-Thon

Huskies Helping Others!

The Wea Ridge Annual Riley Children's Hospital Walk-A-Thon was held on Thursday, October 4th.  Students set a goal of raising $3000, and we surpassed that goal raising $3730!!! Our first donation was from Stidham Methodist Church for $100, our last donation came in from the Lafayette Eagles 347 for $600, and in between our students and staff generously totalled over $3000 in donations.  We appreciate the continued support we have received from the Eagles and Stidham for multiple years!

Not only were Wea Ridge students supporting their community, but they also listened to B102.9's DJ "Joe" broadcasting LIVE from our event!!  Students displayed their maroon and black to show unity in our support of Riley Kids.

Wea Ridge students have now raised over $32,000 in support of Riley Hospital over the past 10 years from our annual walk.  It is truly amazing how many Wea Ridge students and staff members hold Riley Hospital "near and dear" to their hearts due to having used their services directly or having family needing care from Riley.

We would like to thank all of our students, staff, and administration for their generous support of our walk.  Thanks to the Lafayette Eagles 347, Mr. Kurt Williams, Stidham United Methodist Church, Mr. Adam Carmichael, B102.9 and Joe McCay for their continued support to help Huskies help others!

**Organized by the WRM Student Council and WRM Honor Society Members**

Counselor Connection

Our students spent time in October learning about ways we can all be upstanders in our school by taking a stand against bullying and making sure we make the right choices and treat people right. The students signed our pledge poster in the cafeteria. I have posted some resources on the school website that parents can access for more information about bullying, including books that students can check out of our school library. In classroom presentations, students have been really encouraged to think about how our actions can impact others and how we have been impacted so that we can use empathy in order to spread kindness. Please discuss this with your child. It is important that if you become aware of a bullying situation, let us know by contacting me, Mr. Roop, or Mr. Peo so that we can address the situation.

In connection with the Husky Parent Association, I will be hosting Coffee with the Counselor on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 8:30am in Room 127. During this time, I will have 21st Century Scholars Information available and can help with enrolling your student, and will provide information about coping strategies for students to help deal with stress, and anxiety as well as some student success skills. In order to register please complete this form so that I know how many parents to expect. Coffee with the Counselor Registration

8th graders have also had presentations about how they can prepare for high school and college. I talked to them about their grades, becoming involved in their school and community, and we spent some time completing assessments on Indiana Career Explorer so that they could explore some possible careers pathways. I also talked to them about the Twenty-First Century Scholars Program. This is an income-based program that will pay for four years of college for eligible students. Students must enroll in the program by the end of 8th grade. If you are interested in learning more about this, you may check out this website Twenty-First Century Scholars Parent Resources or you may contact me.

Any requests for 2nd semester schedule changes (switching an elective choice, placement concerns, etc.) should be sent to me by Dec. 8.

You are welcome to contact me at the school anytime to discuss a situation. Email is easier than phone in case I am with a student or outside of my office. You may also use this counselor referral form as a streamlined method if you need me to speak with a student.  Counselor Referral Form

Health Office Information

Dear Parents,

As we approach winter and flu season, we wanted to send a reminder with simple hints to help prevent the spread of illness.  You can reduce your child's chance of being infected or infecting others by:

  • washing hands often with soap and water
  • coughing and sneezing into crook of elbow or sleeve
  • cleansing hands after blowing nose
  • not touching your eyes, nose, or mouth
  • avoiding close contact with people who are sick
  • staying home when you are vomiting or have a fever
  • not sharing drinks and food with other

Please share these tips with your children!  Thank you in advance for your assistance!

TSC Volunteer Proceedures

It is a priority of the Tippecanoe School Corporation to provide a safe learning environment for all of our students and employees. In an effort to continue our due diligence, we now require all volunteers having ongoing contact with children and/or supervising students (field trips, etc.) to have cleared an expanded criminal background check. These background checks are conducted through Background Investigation Bureau (BIB).

The criminal background check will search national sex offender databases, court records, and other sources. The cost of the criminal history check is $17.95 (base cost) and is paid for by the volunteer through a link on our website.

Once approved, the volunteer will receive a TSC Volunteer identification card that will be valid for a period of three (3) years. If you volunteer in multiple buildings, you will only need to complete one background check.

Volunteer background checks may take several business days to process so it is important to plan ahead.

We appreciate your understanding of this important safety guideline.

Homework Help

Husky Homework Help

Husky Homework Help is every day after school. Students are expected to collect their belongings and come straight to room 209. If you don't have homework, you are asked to go home. This eliminates distractions for students working. We study from 2:30-3:15. Parents need to make sure there is a ride at school by 3:15. While here, students are expected to work quietly.  Mrs. Kellogg will be available for help with assignments.
