Sweet and Hull's  Highlights

Mr. Hull and I will be eating with those who earned "Eat with the Principal" for the fundraiser.  A list was emailed to teachers indicating those students who earned this award and they will let you know if your student qualified for this lunch!.  We will have this lunch Monday, November 19th for all students who qualify. We will be serving grilled hot dogs, chips, cookies, and a drink. Thank you for your support this year during our fundraiser!

Last week, a wonderful program was presented by the 4th grade students in honor of Veteran's Day.  The program included facts about Veteran's Day,the girl scouts presenting and moving the colors, poems, and patriotic songs under the instruction of our music teachers, Mrs. Polk and Mrs. Goff.  Classes in grades 1-5 and approximately 100 guests including almost a dozen veterans enjoyed the program. Woodland students have also written letters to veterans thanking them for their service.  Great job, everyone!!!

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving next week!  Just a reminder, there will not be school Wednesday the 21st, Thursday the 22nd, or Friday the 23rd!  Have a restful holiday!

Reminders:

The tardy bell rings at 9:00 a.m. If a student arrives at school after the tardy bell rings we require a parent to walk the student into the building and sign the student in at the office. A hallway pass will be given to the student and they may proceed to class.

Please put your students name inside their coat. We have a lot of lost and found, here at Woodland. If your student is missing any items, please check the lost and found as soon as possible.

Woodland is looking for people who are interested in substituting as an instructional assistant when a member of the Woodland Staff would be absent. People are needed to help with supervision of students at recess and in the cafeteria. Woodland also needs individuals who are willing to work with individual or small groups through the resource room. If you are interested and able to help out with these paid substitute opportunities, please contact Ms. Nulty at Woodland.

Tippecanoe School Corporation and Woodland Elementary Website!!

TSC's website underwent a complete overhaul last summer. It has essentially become a one stop shop for all news, events, and reminders. Please take some time to explore the site and the "Parents" tab. Under this tab you will find how to access the ParentPortal and most importantly—how to sign up for alerts.  Please click the link "TSC Alerts & Notifications".  This link will take you to a document that will guide you in signing up for alerts via text or email. This is  very important because of late buses. Or weather delays/cancellations. It is also a great way to get reminders for events that we place on our school calendar. If you have questions, please call the Woodland office.

PLEASE be sure to keep your EMAIL ADDRESS  up to date on your ParentPortal for important communication from the school office!!

DROP OFF AND PICK UP PROCEDURES

All students who are picked up and /or dropped off by cars are to utilize the back parking lot. Students should enter doors #16 and #17. Students may not be dropped off before 8:50. Please do not let your student out of the vehicle before you see an adult.

The front parking area is for unloading and loading buses only. Please DO NOT drop off any students in the front of the building.

All doors will be locked at 9:00. If your child arrives after 9:00 please enter through the front doors and you must sign them in at the office.

Personal Body Safety

During November, our counselor will be meeting with each classroom to present a TSC-required sexual abuse prevention lesson. The Indiana Department of Education requires that these lessons be completed by December 15, 2018. Each lesson consists of either a book-based or DVD-based discussion to help students develop an important personal safety plan. If you have any questions or would like to preview the material for your child's grade level, please call our counselor, Mr. Mugford, at 269-8220.

Get Ready for Flu Season

Flu season is around the corner! Protect yourself and your family this season with an annual flu vaccine for everyone in your family who is 6 months and older. While the timing of flu season is unpredictable, seasonal flu activity can begin as early as October and last as late as May. CDC recommends that people get vaccinated by the end of October, if possible.  It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body that protect against influenza virus infection.

Three Actions to Fight the Flu this Flu Season

Flu is a serious contagious disease that can lead to hospitalization and even death. You have the power to protect yourself and your family this season with these three actions to fight flu.

  1. Get a flu vaccine. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get a flu vaccine by the end of October, if possible. A yearly flu vaccine is the first and most important step in protecting against the flu.
  2. Take everyday actions to stop the spread of germs. Wash your hands often with soap and water, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and wash your hands often with soap and water. If you become sick, limit your contact with others to keep from infecting them.
  3. Take flu antiviral drugs if your doctor prescribes them. If you get the flu, medicine, called antiviral drugs, can be used to treat flu illness. Antiviral drugs can make illness milder and shorten the time you are sick. They may also prevent serious flu complications. Learn more about how you can fight the flu this season at www.cdc.gov/fightflu

What You Need to Know this Flu Season

The flu can be very dangerous for children. Each year about 20,000 children younger than 5 years old are hospitalized from flu complications, like pneumonia.  Most children who die from flu have not been vaccinated.

You have the power to protect your family from flu this season by getting vaccinated and making sure everyone in your family 6 months and older gets their yearly flu vaccine too.

You have the power to protect your family against flu this season. Get yourself and your family a flu vaccine. Fight the Flu!

IMMUNIZATIONS
We have started sending out notices to families that still need updated immunizations. Please have immunizations completed as soon as possible. Indiana state policy states that a school must have updated immunization records on file for each student at the start of the school year. If you know that you have not sent in these records please do so. IC 20-34-4-3 Indiana Code 2015
The link below provides the immunizations required to attend school. Remember to get your flu shots!

EXCLUSIONS
Thank you families for continuing to keep your children healthy! We have noticed that you are making a difference at home and teaching valuable handwashing skills! I see lots of students being diligent to wash their hands. Students with vomiting, diarrhea, undiagnosed eye infections, or fever over 100° should not attend school. They should be symptom free for 24 hours. Students exhibiting these symptoms at school will be sent home.

LICE
We do not perform class lice checks. It would be beneficial to your family if you check your children's heads at home on a regular basis. If you notice live lice or eggs in your child's head please remove the lice before sending your child to school. This will help us keep lice out of school. If live lice are found moving around on your child's head at school, the student may be sent home until the living lice are removed. Students will not be excluded for the presence of nits, also known as lice eggs. Thank you so much for your help with this!

OTC MEDICATIONS
Thank you for keeping medications with an adult and keeping our students safe! Our primary focus is on the health and well-being of your child. The goal for our staff is to provide our students with appropriate treatments to keep them at school and in class. The TSC physician provides standing orders for our health offices. These orders allow the use of first-aid medications including contact solution, eye drops, topical antiseptics, topical analgesics, cough drops, throat spray, antacids, oral glucose, and activated charcoal. Antihistamines (Benadryl and Pepcid) will be used as the first treatment of severe allergic reactions, and epinephrine is available if needed. It is the parent's/guardian's responsibility to notify the health office at their child's school if they prefer these items not be used when treating their child.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Woodland Health Office. Thank you for taking such good care of your kiddos!

Volunteer Procedures Changing - Effective September 30, 2018

It is a priority of the Tippecanoe School Corporation to provide a safe learning environment for all of our students and employees. In an effort to continue our due diligence, we now require all volunteers having ongoing contact with children and/or supervising students (field trips, etc.) to have cleared an expanded criminal background check. These background checks are conducted through Background Investigation Bureau (BIB).

The criminal background check will search national sex offender databases, court records, and other sources. The cost of the criminal history check is $17.95 (base cost) and is paid for by the volunteer through a link on our website. SECUREVOLUNTEER

Once approved, the volunteer will receive a TSC Volunteer identification card that will be valid for a period of three (3) years. If you volunteer in multiple buildings, you will only need to complete one background check.

Volunteer background checks may take several business days to process so it is important to plan ahead.

We appreciate your understanding of this important safety guideline.
