Mintonye Elementary March 2019 | Spring Issue NEWSLETTER Hello Pioneer Families,
Are we in the last quarter of the 2018-2019 school year already? The third quarter was filled with much learning, many milestones, and great achievement. Thank you, parents, for attending the Parent Teacher Conferences last week. We enjoy working with you, as a team, to achieve great results. Thank you to the Mintonye PTO for the generous staff meals during the long evenings of the Parent Teacher Conferences. We appreciate you!
We wish to also thank the Mintonye PTO for hosting the 2019 Spring Frolic and the Scholastic Book Fair and a special thanks to all of the families who supported and attended both events. Hosting these yearly family-fun event, allows us to refrain from school wide sales fundraisers and to enjoy time with our extended Pioneer family. We appreciate the vendors who donated product and the many families who volunteered time and help to ensure the events' success.
Spring always seems to pass rather quickly and we have much left to accomplish. As we start to plan for next year's incoming kindergarten class and ready our fifth grade for middle school transition, we thank you for helping us to finish strong by sticking to schedules, ensuring your children are here at school regularly, on time, and ready for learning. As always, if you have any concerns, let us know.
Mr. Skaggs

Purdue University Spring Fest 2019 Nears Purdue University and the College of Agriculture would like to invite all students and their families to attend Spring Fest 2019. The annual event showcases the lighter side of higher education through hands on activities. The free event is a great opportunity for students of all ages to learn about animals, art, insects and so much more. A few of the highlights include the College of Veterinary Medicine's open house, Bug Bowl, the Purdue Horticulture Society's plant sale and the Department of Animal Sciences boiler barnyard. Please join us for a lot of fun on April 6 and 7. Check out the fun Spring Fest Coloring Page here. Another great Purdue University-sponsored event is Chem-E Days. We hope to see you at both events!
Kindergarten Roundup and Orientation We are corralling the 2019-2020 incoming kindergarten class now. Do you have friends, family, or neighbors in the Mintonye area that will be five as of August 1, 2019? Please remind them to call us to pre-register their child for school at 765.538.2780.
We will host Mintonye's Kindergarten Roundup on April 10 at 6:00 PM. Plan to provide the health department issued birth certificate, immunization and shot records, and proof of residency prior to or during Roundup. We are glad to make copies of these documents and the nurse will be on hand to answer medical related questions you may have and to offer medication and allergy paperwork.
Testing Several times throughout the year, teachers administer standardized testing. During those testing windows, we ask that you make every effort to ensure your children are at school on time, well rested, and having had a nutritious breakfast. Please avoid scheduling appointments during these windows and encourage your child to do their very best.
Career Day Consider joining us for Career Day 2019, April 19. For more details please email Mrs. Striegel at tlstriegel@tsc.k12.in.us. Thank you!
Field Trips Although several field trips have already taken place, a few more are nearing. If you hope to serve as a chaperone, please be sure you have visited the Tippecanoe School Corporation website and have completed the SecureVolunteer application. Although there is a fee for the application, you can choose to have the results made available to multiple schools and the approval is good for three years.
Fifth Grade Transition It will not be long until our fifth grade students transition to Southwestern Middle School. This week students received a visit from Mr. Spray, School Principal, as well as members of the Wildcat team, including the Band Director, Choir Director, and the Guidance Counselor. Tuesday evening, parents visited Southwestern to get an overview of scheduling, lockers, lunch accounts, sports and clubs, etc. Today, our fifth graders will trek to Southwestern to check the lay of the land themselves.
Be sure to discuss, as a family, the choice between Band, Choir, or General Music and return your child's preferences before April 4.
Watch for further information throughout the summer from Southwestern Middle School and visit their website at https://sms.tsc.k12.in.us/student-life/incoming-6th-grade-information. Fifth Grade Walk Always a Pioneer, but soon to also become Wildcats. It is time to prepare for the end of the year. Traditionally, the fifth grade student body has taken part in a grand exit on the last day of school, from the fifth grade hallway to the front doors, among a tunnel of younger Pioneers. We will plan to do the same this year on Tuesday, May 28 just a few minutes before the end of school. Parents are welcome to attend and stand in the line, behind the students, if they choose. Fifth Grade Celebration With parent help, we will host a fifth grade breakfast to let our Pioneers know how proud we are of them and that we wish them much good luck next year! The breakfast will take place shortly after arrival on Friday, May 24. We plan to follow tradition of providing the students with milk, juice, doughnuts, etc. and to have a prepared fun slide show.
Want to donate food items, help decorate, help at the party? Want to donate fun items for a care package? (There are currently around 90 students in the fifth grade.) Email: admiller@tds.net
We will host a planning meeting on Wednesday, April 3 at 5:30 in the library. Please join us!
We welcome your photos also. Feel free to send school related photos of the fifth grade to klbrewer@tsc.k12.in.us for inclusion in the PowerPoint. If your child did not attend Mintonye in grades K - 4, and you would like to send their formal school picture from another school, please also email klbrewer@tsc.k12.in.us. The final date for photo submission will be Friday, May 3. (No late photos will be accepted.)
