Summer 2019 NEWSLETTER Message from the Principal Mike Pinto The 2018-2019 school year has been a successful one with many milestones reached academically and socially. This newsletter is meant to house all the important information you might need througout the summer and when you begin to turn your sights toward the 2019-2020 school year. Please review the five goals I have for your children over the summer. Some are whimsical. Some require your help. Some require you to let your child be a child and just do. Five is an attainable number in terms of a goal. Thank you for a wonderful school year. Enjoy your summer. To our fifth graders, thank you for six great years and remember, "Once a Cole Cub; Always a Cole Cub". Please remember that Doing the Right Thing and Treating People Right aren't just elementary ideas - they are standards to hold yourself to throughout life. Have a great summer. Mike Pinto, Principal
Construction Projects This summer Cole will be undergoing several construction projects which will require everyone's patience. The main office is being completely renovated with a new entrance that will be used during the school day, handicap-accessible nurse's office restroom and shower, a larger conference room, and wider office walkways.
The library work room is being updated into a new workroom for the staff.
The library is slowly undergoing a transformation of its own as the John and Ruby Parks Trust continues to assist with funding to add more flexibility to that space. Over the past five years we have added over $25,000 in new titles, replaced the tables and chairs, updated the circulation desk, added some soft seating, and have begun the slow process of replacing the unattached shelving units with ones on wheels. Next year we will be adding more shelving units that and hopefully some more soft seating. The ultimate goal is to have a 21st century space that will allow us flexibility for use with a variety of classroom and community needs.
A mural is being created under the supervision of Matt Marks. This mural will replace the bulletin boards in between the art and music rooms in the Cole lobby. The mural will be historical in nature and we feel will be a point of remembrance and a point of education for years to come both for our students and for our families and guests. This mural is being funded by the Cole PTO and an anonymous patron donor.
Finally, the east playground will receive new soft surface and a concrete path from the blacktop.
All of the projects are expected to be completed August 1. Your patience is needed during this project. Please assist us during summer recreation baseball and softball by encouraging your children to stay away from equipment and construction areas. Also, a temporary office has been established in the music room if assisance is needed during the day. We look forward to the fresh look that will appear as you return next year. Thank you for your cooperation during construction.
Thank You For Service (L-R): Mrs. Wykoff, Mrs. Pierce, and Mrs.Gish will not be returning to Cole next school year as their families are all moving. We appreciate their service to Cole and wish them the best in their future endeavors. Thank you for all that you have done for our students.
Report Cards and Class Lists Report cards are available to print from the Parent Portal. This is the site you use to check your child's grades throughout the year. You can see your child's beacher when you register your child and through the parent portal in mid June.

Mrs. Kesterson will return to the office on July 26 and can help answer questions after that time.

Summer Reading Program The Tippecanoe County Public Library is once again hosting a Summer Reading Program "A Universe of Stories" for students. Please see the links below for information about this reading program and also the Bookmobile schedule. Avoid the summer reading dip by making reading a part of your child's daily summer schedule.
New Staff Member to Cole We continue to grow at James Cole Elementary School and with that growth comes the need for a third section of second grade. We are pleased to announce that Miss Brooke Holden will be joining Cole as a second grade teacher next school year. Miss Holden is familiar to some of you as she completed a maternity leave for Mrs. Rock in kindergarten the third nine weeks. The current grade level configurations in grades K, 1, 3, 4, and 5 will continue next year. Welcome, Miss Holden.

Volunteer Information It is a priority of the Tippecanoe School Corporation to provide a safe learning environment for all of our students and employees. In an effort to continue our due diligence, we now require all volunteers having ongoing contact with children and/or supervising students (field trips, etc.) to have cleared an expanded criminal background check. These background checks are conducted through Background Investigation Bureau (BIB).

Parents, Our Children Are Watching - They Really Are
It's that time of year again when baseball, and softball practices and games are being played on the school grounds. Everyone's help is needed to make these events positive for our children. Keeping our school grounds clean and attractive takes a community effort. Please encourage your child to help pick up trash after ball games. Sportsmanship is also needed for a positive experience for our children. The Lauramie Summer Rec. Department expects coaches, team members, and parents to conduct themselves at all time with civility. The use of profanity, alcohol, or tobacco at the game site or in the presence of children is unacceptable. Our efforts to keep our school grounds beautiful and to act appropriately around our children send a strong signal to them. Parking is permitted on black top surfaced areas only and not permitted on the grass. Help our custodians who are in and out of both garage door areas by not parking in these locations. Also, please use the driveway to enter and exit the school grounds. Do not travel down the grassy path cut between the fields under which the sewer line runs to enter and exit. Our actions show visitors to our school the high expectations we have for our children's behavior and the pride we hold as a school community. Please help us keep a balance this summer with your words and your actions. Because your childen are watching. They really are.
