Mintonye Elementary MAY 2019 | Summer Issue NEWSLETTER Hello Pioneer Families,
We've only days left before summer and cannot imagine anything else that we could have fit into this school year. It was a fast-paced, but very good and successful year. Our students made great strides in learning, they gained many new skills, and they stepped up to the challenges of testing.
We would like to share our best wishes on retirement to Ms. Pohl. Lynn has worked at Mintonye for seven years and we are sad to see her move on, but excited she will be visiting her grandchildren that attend Mintonye, frequently. Enjoy!
Miss Watson and the Life Skills classroom will be relocated to Woodland beginning in the fall. We will miss having Brittany, her staff, and sweet students here at Mintonye. Wish them well on their new adventure.
Mrs. Habben has accepted a position at Lafayette School Corporation and we wish her all the best as she continues her teaching career. She will be missed at Mintonye. (We will make the teaching announcement to the incoming fourth graders as soon as possible.)
Ms. Overbay is excited to be teaching kindergarten again and will round out that grade level by adding a fourth classroom. Welcome her back to kindergarten!
We've a large incoming second grade class and will add a fourth classroom. We are excited to announce the addition of Mrs. Jasmin Avila to staff. She currently teaches second grade and joins us from Wea Ridge Elementary School with 14 years of teaching experience. Jasmin and husband have four children; two boys and two girls. Jasmin says "You can always find me on the soccer field cheering my kids on! I love watching them play soccer while drinking a cup of coffee either hot or iced depending on the Indiana weather". Help us welcome Mrs. Avila to the Pioneer staff!
Monday, May 27, the Tippecanoe School Corporation observes Memorial Day and we will not be in school. Please be sure you are sending your children for the last student day of the 2018-2019 school year, Tuesday, May 28. We will have Field Day in the morning and a busy day planned.
Yearbooks are headed home this week and class lists will be posted Friday afternoon.
We hope you will encourage your children to read this summer. Encourage interactive play and the great outdoors. Take some short family road trips, if you are able, and experience travel. Support summer learning and growing! As always, if you have any concerns, let us know.
Happy Summer!
Mr. Skaggs
AZZIP PIZZA Fund Raiser Join us at AZZIP PIZZA on Wednesday, May 22! No need to prepare dinner. Instead, enjoy a custom made, flavorful, yummy pizza and 20% of all proceeds will be given to the Mintonye PTO, to support our school. You must show them a picture of the flyer or print and present the FLYER. Thank you for always supporting our efforts! Kona Ice Visit Students in kindergarten through fourth grade will be able to purchase a $2 Kona kiddie Ice on Friday, May 24 during their recess. If you would like for your child to participate in the special treat, send in $2 cash on Friday. Help your child decide what flavor they want in advance. Recess aides will be on sight to help them make their purchases.
Fifth grade will receive their traditional Kona Ice compliments of the Mintonye PTO as part of their final elementary celebration. No need to send in money for their Kona treat. Fifth Grade Walk Always a Pioneer, but soon to also become Wildcats. Traditionally, the fifth grade student body has taken part in a grand exit on the last day of school, from the fifth grade hallway to the front doors, among a tunnel of younger Pioneers. We will plan to do the same this year on Tuesday, May 28 just a few minutes before the end of school. Parents are welcome to attend and stand in the line, behind the students, if they choose. Notes from Mrs. Striegel Your child's safety is important in and out of school. That's why I'm sharing this resource from Committee for Children, the organization that makes the Second Step social-emotional learning program. Research shows that talking to your kids about sexual abuse, touching, and private body parts can help keep them safe. This is a scary subject, but talking about it shouldn't be. HotChocolateTalk.org is a free, research-based resource that provides the facts, tips, and talking points that can help you start this critical safety conversation. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Learn how you can help prevent abuse at HotChocolateTalk.org. Sincerely, Tara Striegel, HS-BCP, Student Services Coordinator
Calendar Change Due to snow days on January 30 and 31, school will be in session on May 24 and May 28. May 28 will be the last student day of the 2018-2019 school year. Let's finish the year strong.
