Message from the Principal

STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math

At James Cole Elementary School, as well as in all Tippecanoe School Corporation Elementary Schools, a commitment is being made to intentionally teach STEM Skills in grades K-5. Each nine weeks there is a grade level STEM activity that occurs which is provided by the school corporation.  The Cole PTO also supports classroom teachers in their efforts to teach STEM activities with funding at each level for materials. Science instruction now includes technology, engineering, and math.  It is interactive. It is messy. It is sometimes frustrating when we try something and it doesn't work. But in the end, what we are hoping for with our students is that they are better thinkers who can work together to solve a problem and are not afraid to try, fail, and try again.  Ask your child about STEM. Look for a Cole Science Night on February 23 at 6:00 before the Movie Night that same day.

Grandparents/Veterans Day

We are ready for Grandparents/Veterans Day on Friday, November 10.  Mrs. Ewigleben will be offering a patriotic tribute to our veterans including the "American Classics" that Cole works to ensure our students know before leaving us.  There will be a rehearsal of the music program at 2:00 on Thursday, November 9 with the full program occurring  on November 10.  Because of our larger student population, we will have some changes this year to the program schedule.

1:00-1:30:  Grades K-2 and Grade 5 Program

2:00-2:30:  Grades 3-5 Program

Students are to wear Red, White, and Blue

The book fair will be open for grandparents to shop beginning at Noon. We are asking that shopping occurs with grandparent only until after the final show ends at 2:30.  Students in grades 3-5 will be in their classrooms beginning at 1:00 to host grandparents and to do classroom activities.  They will proceed to the gymnasium prior to the 2:00 show.  Students in grades K-2 will begin in the gymnasium with their music show and will then proceed to the classroom for activities.  When both shows are finished, students will be able to walk around the building to show off different for tours, etc.  Please make sure grandparents "check out" with each classroom teacher if they are taking a grandchild with them at the end of their stay.

We thank the PTO for their efforts with this annual event and celebration. We are hoping the change in schedule will accommodate our larger population and make for a more enjoyable and less congested experience for all.

Daylight Saving Time

Remember it's time to move your clocks back "Fall Back" one hour before bed on Saturday evening, November 4 for Daylight Saving Time. The actual time is Sunday, November 5 at 2:00 a.m., but a good habit is to set the clocks back before heading off to bed. Don't forget the clocks in your car. It's also a good time to change your smoke detector batteries in your house.

Counseling Update

During the month of November Mrs. Burton will be working with students on the importance of showing gratitude. Class lessons will include understanding what gratitude is and how to show it. Students will have the opportunity to reflect and share about what they are thankful for.

"The real gift of gratitude is that the more grateful you are, the more present you become." –Robert Holden

Digital Citizenship

We are going a little 'old school technology' to explain this Digital Citizenship Tip. If you remember a broken record that would skip and play the same thing over and over again, you will understand this tip. Be a "Broken Record" when it comes to digital citizenship. Don't be afraid to say something to your child once, twice, four times. The more they hear, the better chance that your message will stick regarding online safety and proper procedures when using technology.

Stay Fit While Your Child Practices

Do you know that if you start on the edge of the blacktop where the gravel begins going toward the concession stand and walk down the drive to the sign in the front of the building it is 1/3 of a mile? It is. Lots of times parents use the safety of Cole as a place for walking and exercise. We will be working on signage in the future to show this as well as laps around the Outdoor Education Center 4 1/3 laps is a mile? There are many ways to exercise while at Cole during events. Don't hesitate to use our beautiful grounds as a backdrop for your fitness goals.

November is National Gratitude Month:  Take a time to send an affirmation to a Cole Staff Member who has made a difference for one of your children. Affirmation cards are located on the counter in the front office. You can also simply jot a quick handwritten note. Affirmations matter as they express gratitude. We have a lot to be thankful for at Cole. You can show someone your gratitude with just a simple note of thanks.
