Message from the Principal

Kyle Spray

After a very successful first semester, we turn our attention to second semester and all that it brings in the coming months. In athletics, our girls basketball and wrestling teams have strong numbers and are now beginning competition. Track and Field will begin practice in March for those interested. In other extracurricular programs, our clubs are continuing to be very visible throughout the school. Wildcats for Change is beginning a service project with SIA through the Jefferson Awards program. Student Council and Art Club remain very active, and Mr. Steindorff is sponsoring a new Game Club after school on Tuesdays. As always, we encourage students to get involved in extracurricular activities as much as possible.

With the transition to spring comes much testing. SMS completed the second of three rounds of NWEA testing during the first week after winter break, with the final NWEA testing window coming in May. ISTEP testing occurs in two parts. Part one is scheduled for 2/27-3/1, and part two is scheduled for 4/24-4/26. Additional testing in Science 6 and Social Studies 7 will occur on 5/1 and 5/2 in those classes. Reminders will be sent out prior to those dates to ensure that we all give students a chance to put forth their best effort during testing.

After our two school closings due to weather, students will be in session on 2/19 and 5/25 as make-up days. If you have not done so already, please sign up for TSC Alerts and Notifications on the TSC website under the Parents tab. Additionally, parents can sign up for Southwestern Middle alerts to learn of any updates from our school specifically. The Southwestern Middle School calendar is also an available subscription through the website for SMS parents.

We look forward to an outstanding second semester and the continued pursuit of excellence for our students.

Go Wildcats!

TSC students have new suicide prevention resource

IU Health Arnett has partnered with Mental Health America of Tippecanoe County to bring suicide prevention resources to teens throughout Tippecanoe County. Knowing that the preferred method of communication is texting, there is a need to provide a local resource for teens to text when feeling stressed or suicidal. The number to text is 765-742-0244.

The Safe2Talk texts are responded by employees and volunteers of Mental Health America of Tippecanoe County (MHA). All texts are responded to in seconds and the line is staffed 24/7. MHA staff and volunteers go through an extensive assessment and successfully complete 40 hours of classroom training, as well as on-the-job preparation. Safe2Talk is certified as a crisis center by the American Association of Suicidality as part of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Only the best practices, policies, and procedures are used.

In association with the Safe2Talk initiative, all TSC administrators and school counselors have been trained in QPR. QPR stands for Question, Persuade and Refer. These are three steps anyone can learn to help prevent suicide. This training session teaches attendees how to recognize the warning signs and risk factors associated with suicidal thoughts and when to utilize QPR. Just like CPR, QPR is an emergency response to someone in crisis and can save lives. This training is recognized by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration as an evidence-based training.

TSC E-Flyers and Community Organizations Logo

21st Century Scholars Logo

Indiana started the 21st Century Scholars in 1990 to ensure that every student can afford a college education. Income-eligible 7th and 8th graders who enroll in the program and fulfill a pledge of good citizenship are guaranteed to receive up to four years of undergraduate tuition* at any participating public college or university in Indiana.

If you attend a private or an independent institution, the state will award an amount comparable to that of a public institution. If you attend a participating proprietary (private career) school, the state will award a tuition scholarship equal to that of Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana.

As a 21st Century Scholar, you can get help finding free tutoring, a mentor and a part-time job, and once you get to college, students who are 21st Century Scholars receive support to finish their college degrees.

But first you have to apply. Students and their parents must complete and return the application by June 30 of the 8th grade year. Don't wait. Apply today:
