Burnett Creek students enjoy their own county fair

Third-grade students at Burnett Creek Elementary are reading how Wilbur the pig is preparing for the county fair in the novel, Charlotte's Web. To help them understand the excitement for that event, the school held its own county fair.

Students had an opportunity to pet farm animals, play games and enjoy cotton candy and elephant ears. There were also STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activities that tied in with the story. Different stations had students designing a perfect pig pen, Ferris wheel and spider parachute. Some students enjoyed an old fashion sack race, while others tried the obstacle course with tires, saw horses and wooden beams.

At the face painting station, a parent volunteer drew a black cat on Alli Lawrance's face. "I loved everything, especially the elephant ears."

Classmate Korbyn Keen says going to the fair is about having fun. "This helps us understand the chapter we are in now where Wilbur is getting ready to go to the fair," says Korbyn.

A grant from the Public Schools Foundation of Tippecanoe County helped fund some of the activities.
