National School Nurse Day honors all nurses who care for children in our schools every day. School nurses lead the way in promoting healthy choices and supporting education by ensuring that students are healthy, safe and ready to learn.
Mayflower Mill Elementary School hired Vicki Vaught, RN, as the school nurse eight years ago. Vaught sees about 100 students a day who have a variety of needs from taking prescription medications to using inhalers.
"Being the school nurse is so rewarding," says Vaught. "I love how the children trust that we will take care of them. The students know they can rely on us to be here, even if it is just needing to talk to someone. I love seeing them smiling and feeling better!"
Nurses serve on the forefront of promoting healthy lifestyles and creating a safe environment for children to learn and grow. TSC employs more than 30 nurses and health aides in the Health Services Department. Since the start of the 2017-2018 school year, our health offices have seen 169,458 visits to the health offices and have performed or assisted with 5,106 student vision screenings.
