Students in the Tippecanoe School Corporation participated in the statewide tornado preparedness drill March 19 to reinforce emergency procedures.
TSC schools conduct tornado and lockout/lockdown drills at least once a semester, fire drills once a month and earthquake drills once a year.
"Indiana is susceptible to severe weather conditions and natural disasters year-round," says TSC Director of Buildings, Grounds and Safety Steve Tobias. "It is imperative that we conduct drills to be prepared for a tornado as we have seen firsthand the damage that can occur when a tornado damaged Southwestern Middle School and Mintonye Elementary School on November 17, 2013. Parents should review emergency procedures with their students and become familiar with the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) utilized at school, as well as actions to take at home."
Tobias says practicing and knowing what to do can help ease anxiety in case of a real emergency.
The TSC has at least one school safety specialist at each of its 19 schools and more than 30 districtwide.
