Klondike teacher named Top 10 finalist

A Klondike Elementary School physical education teacher is among the state’s Top 10 finalists in the Indiana Teacher of the Year program.

Andrea Bornino, a Purdue University graduate with 19 years of experience in education, is dedicated to changing how students and communities view physical education. She works to build a school wellness culture that extends beyond the gym.

“When students learn to move and move to learn, they build the confidence, joy and habits needed for a lifetime of wellness,” Bornino says.

Bornino creates learning experiences that combine physical activity with teamwork, problem-solving and other skills students can use throughout their lives. Her students learn activities such as tennis, golf and bike riding while also exploring nutrition and developing teamwork skills.

Her approach also connects physical education with other areas of learning. In one STEM activity, students design and build their own miniature golf courses, applying creativity, problem-solving and engineering skills while putting their golf skills into practice.

Bornino’s impact extends beyond the classroom. She leads district and statewide initiatives, secures grants to expand programming and mentors future educators through Purdue University, where she serves as a lecturer.

Bornino says physical education can play an important role in helping students develop skills that extend far beyond sports. Through movement and meaningful learning experiences, she aims to help students build the confidence, resilience and healthy habits they need to lead active lives.

The Indiana Teacher of the Year program will continue its selection process, with one educator ultimately named Indiana Teacher of the Year.
