Burnett Creek installs free neighborhood library
Sue Scott

Maples Mobile Home Park is now home to a free little library. The mailbox-sized structure is filled with books to share and exchange.

The project was spearheaded by third grade teacher Debbie Beckett at Burnett Creek Elementary. “I thought this would be a great way to share extra books from our classrooms and libraries,” says Beckett. “We decided to put the library in a neighborhood so students could get books without needing transportation to get them.”

Burnett Creek parent, Mark Ailor (pictured below), and his son built and installed the library. It is located near the new picnic tables and WiFi hotspot.

“We are still adding books to the library,” says Beckett. “We have added many genres at many reading levels. We have added some board books for babies, picture books, chapter books, books on CD, and some DVDs.” A few of the books already included are “Judy Moody Was in a Mood,” “Charlotte’s Web” and “Stink.”
