Mayflower Mill Breakfast Club feeds on positivity
Sue Scott

Kindness, responsibility, honesty, trust and respect. Those are five words on the back of a coin that TSC School Resource Officer Beth Kidwell gave students in the Mayflower Mill Elementary School Breakfast Club.

The group meets every morning with teacher Jessica Harris and aide Kimberly Dowell. Deputy Kidwell says she started each week talking about one of the words on the coin.

“We talked about what that word means and how we can implement it into our daily lives,” says Deputy Kidwell. “I would return the next week to Breakfast Club and the students would all be so excited to share their stories of what they did to check that word off their coin.”

With the final challenge word “trust,” Deputy Kidwell invited officers with two K9s to the Breakfast Club. The officers demonstrated how the handlers must trust their dogs and the dogs trust their handlers.

After completing all five challenge words, Deputy Kidwell rewarded each student with another metal challenge coin. “I cannot speak highly enough about this group and how much of an impact they made on me. I was able to build what I hope are lasting positive relationships with a small group of kids. I learned right along with them and looked forward to meeting with them every week.”
