Students donate to help animal shelter
Sue Scott

Students at the TSC’s Elston Alternative Education Center are giving back to the community by making a donation to an animal shelter. Teacher Deb DeLion and a few of her students delivered several bags of dog food and more than $300 worth of canned cat food to North Central Indiana Spay & Neuter at Crystal Creek Kennels.

Elston classes hold donut days and other events throughout the school year to raise funds. The students raise $350-$600 each year depending on enrollment. DeLion consulted with the shelter on needs and placed their order. Pay Less Super Markets added to their donation and all the food was delivered to the shelter June 19.

Shelter Director Nita Pollock says the success of the shelter is directly related to donations and support from groups like TSC’s alternative education program. “Over the years, this group has donated dog and cat food to our facility,” says Pollock. “These generous donations are essential to our operation.”

“I started this community service project because I love dogs,” says DeLion. “I also want to try to change the perception some people have toward students in the alternative education program.”
